The women who came before her.
A baby girl, her mother, and her grandmother. A newborn session about the little things we notice now, and the things that may matter even more later.
A photo can mean more with time.
When a baby is brand new, everyone sees the same things first. The tiny hands. The sleepy face. The way she fits so completely into the arms holding her.
Years from now, she may see something different.
She may notice how young her mother looked. The way her grandmother leaned toward them. The hands that held her before she could ever remember being held.
Right now, she is the center of the photograph. Someday, the photograph may become just as much about the women who surrounded her.
The smallest details.
Newborn photography has a way of preserving things that disappear almost before we notice them changing.
A furrowed brow. A tiny hand resting against a cheek. The shape of her feet. The way she curls into a wrap.
For this session, we kept everything soft and quiet. Cream, warm neutrals, subtle florals, and just enough detail to frame her without taking anything away from her.
Before they can tell us who they are.
Some of my favorite newborn portraits are the ones with almost nothing in them.
Just a baby looking back at the camera.
The raised eyebrow. The serious little stare. The tongue peeking out. The expression that somehow already feels completely hers.
Motherhood deserves to be remembered too.
Newborn sessions are about a baby, but they are also about the beginning of something for her mother.
Babies will not remember how they fit against our chest, how carefully we held them, or the way we looked at them in those first weeks.
But they can have the images.
That is why I always encourage mothers to step into the frame, even when they are tired, even when they do not feel completely like themselves yet, and even when they originally imagined a gallery filled only with baby.
A place for the people who came before.
If grandparents are able to be part of a newborn session, I think it is always worth making the session.
It does not need to be elaborate.
Sometimes three people sitting close together is enough.
A portrait of a newborn shows what she looked like at the beginning of her life. A portrait with her mother and grandmother gives her a glimpse of the story she came from.
